Hosted PBX Telephone System – Telephone Systems “in the cloud”

According to Matthias Machowinski, at Infonetics Research (a leading telecommunications market research organisation), "From an IP- PBX Telephone System * survey conducted this year, it appears that businesses are increasingly embracing a hosted services model, as their capacity needs will depend on how robust the current economic recovery is, and hosted services allow them to more easily ramp their capacity needs up and down without a huge cash layout for equipment."

*An IP PBX Telephone System is a Private Branch Exchange (telephone switching system within an organisation or company) that switches calls between VoIP users on local lines while allowing all users to share a certain number of external phone lines. The typical IP PBX Telephone System can also switch calls between a VoIP user and a traditional telephone user, or between two traditional telephone users in the same way that a conventional PBX Telephone System does.

In a hosted IP PBX Telephone System system, the PBX Telephone System is located remotely and managed by the telephone or Internet service provider. Communications (voice, data and video) are sent over the Internet. The customer pays for a service as opposed to buying hardware, software and maintaining it themselves.

SIP An application-layer control protocol, a Signaling protocol for Internet Telephony. SIP can establish sessions for features such as audio/videoconferencing, interactive gaming, and call forwarding to be deployed over IP networks thus enabling service providers to integrate basic IP telephony services with Web, e-mail, and chat services Trunk vs ISDN An international standard for end-to-end digital transmission of voice, data, and signaling. In a videoconference it is a system that provides simultaneous voice, video, and text transmission between individual desktop videoconferencing systems and group (room) videoconferencing systems.

Even the savings potentially made on installation and rental are not particularly large, although they can be where large volumes of numbers are involved.
We have found quality and reliability is no longer a major concern with the new generation of broadband connections available and larger organisations can opt for Ethernet One of the most common local area network (LAN) wiring schemes, Ethernet has a transmission rate of 10 megabits per second; a newer standard called Fast Ethernet will carry 100 megabits per second. In the traditional network, the number that is provided by the telephony operator is sourced from the local exchange. In IP Telephony services, the linkage between numbering and location can be broken. This allows unique, cost effective solutions to be delivered to customers that cannot be replicated within an ISDN An international standard for end-to-end digital transmission of voice, data, and signaling. Think of the cost savings that can be made if you need to retain your numbers when you relocate offices. You can take your number and DDIs (your offices extension direct dial numbers) with you!
Do you need to support numbers from different geographic locations from a single site? What about a Glasgow number hosted from your office in Birmingham.
You can even have UK numbers set up for locations overseas to reduce call costs for internal calls and customers calling the overseas office?

In the event of a Disaster rendering your site inaccessible, your account can be used in another telephone system on another site and connected via an IP connection - the service can instantaneously be recreated. Alternatively the telephone system itself could be moved to another site any where there is an IP connection and service automatically be restored.
There is no need to contact your service provider to replicate the network service and there are no additional network charges or remote call forwarding to pay when your main service fails!

Developments - Mobile VoIP

Spain-based carrier Telefónica (who also owns mobile network operator O2) has revealed plans to introduce mobile Internet voice telephony services, following the acquisition of VoIP start-up Jajah.

Telefónica will rollout of IP-based phone services across its O2 businesses in Europe, starting with Germany, where the company is launching a web-based international calling service – ‘O2 Global Friends’. The service will offer low cost international calls via a local number, without the need for new software or hardware.

Matthew Key, chairman and CEO of Telefónica Europe, said in the coming months the company will rollout further Jajah-powered products across Telefónica territories, “To meet the growing demand for these new services.”

Charlotte Patrick, principal analyst at Gartner, said the move to introduce an IP-based calling service by a mainstream carrier shows the maturity of this market and is expected to be replicated by other telcos. “Telefónica’s purchase of Jajah has given it some really interesting long distance calling propositions and their impact on the market should give us an insight into carrier’s future strategy in this area.”
